A Space to Breathe

The Beauty of Less: Finding My Minimalist Voice

Sometimes, as an artist, you just need to take a deep breath.

Around 2002, I was deeply immersed in creating my ‘Millennium Mythos Trilogy’. Those canvases were intense, highly detailed, and packed with complex narratives. I loved creating them, but after a while, I felt a strong artistic pull to strip everything back. I needed a breath of fresh air, and that is exactly how my Minimalist phase began.

The transition wasn’t immediate. It started at the very edges of my mythos universe with the stark, yellow pyramids, ancient, protective guardians standing alone in a quiet landscape. From there, I transitioned entirely into the real world.

Through minimalism, I found I could capture profound moments using only clean lines and bold colours. Whether it was finding gentle serenity in ‘The Calm Sea’ or processing a heavy historical event through the quiet geometry of ‘Twin Towers’, I was exploring the striking, emotional beauty of ‘less being more’.

But minimalism doesn’t always have to be so serious!

In 2007, I painted a piece called ‘Sh Art’. It took a cheeky, satirical turn, poking fun at the madness of the high-end art market. It is a witty nod to the classic gallery brush-off so many artists hear: “We like it, but you need a collection!” It is currently a three-piece work, though fun fact, it actually originally had a fourth!

I close the Minimalist Selection Gallery with my 2020 oil painting, ‘Blue Sky’. It embraces the utter simplicity of life within a clear blue sky, serving as a reminder that amidst all the noise, we all need a moment of quiet reflection.

If you would like to explore these quiet moments for yourself, you can visit the complete Minimalist Selection in my main gallery!
